Introduction
Substitute teaching can be a wonderful professional experience. It provides you with flexibility that few other jobs can offer. You can take your pick of grade levels while reserving the right to "pass" when you need a day off. Teach at the elementary school, it has rewards in every moment. Try the middle (or intermediate) school, where the kids carry the energy in from their primary years and possess a higher ability to retain, create and implement knowledge. Teach at the high school level - where you can instruct in a range of subjects from the fine arts, to high level math, English and science. At any age level, there are rewards and challenges. In a large school system, pick two to three schools you would like to substitute teach in, and then concentrate your efforts on getting to know their faculty, and students.

Before you start substitute teaching it is wise to ask yourself:
-
-
What age level (elementary, middle school, or high school) do I prefer?
-
-
Are there subjects that I feel particularly well qualified to teach?
-
Are there subjects in which I lack confidence?
Once you have those answers, you will be able to help the schools to place you where you would be the most useful. You will be, as an adult professional, in the position to be an influence on children's lives. When taking the position of a substitute teacher, you need to acknowledge that it is your responsibility to be the right kind of influence.
